One-Day Adventure: Scooty Diaries to Yapahuwa Rock

Embarking on my first motorbike (scooty) journey was an experience that I’ll treasure forever. Accompanied by three friends, we planned a one-day road trip from Negombo to explore historical and scenic landmarks. After thorough research, our main destination was set: Yapahuwa Rock Fortress. To make the most of our journey, we included other fascinating stops along the way.

Starting the Adventure

Our day began early at 6:30 AM, departing from Negombo with excitement and anticipation. Our first destination was the Munneswaram Temple in Chilaw, located approximately 46.6 km away, taking about an hour and 17 minutes via the Chilaw-Colombo Main Road (A3).

We stopped for breakfast at Krishna Veg Restaurant in Chilaw, a quaint spot offering delicious vegetarian options. Energized, we visited the Munneswaram Temple, a site rich in history and culture. This temple has connections to Chilaw’s pearling and fishing heritage, as well as ancient trade routes between India and Sri Lanka. Established by the 11th century CE, the temple’s fascinating history includes associations with the Sinhala deity Ayyanayake and colonial-era Jesuit accounts of spirit possession. Exploring the site, we appreciated the blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences, along with the temple’s serene ambiance.

Exploring Panduwasnuwara

Our next stop was Panduwasnuwara, a site of historical ruins located 33.5 km away (about 45 minutes via the Chilaw-Wariyapola Road, B79).

The site, associated with King Parakramabahu the Great, is believed to have been the capital of Dakkhinadesa during the 12th century CE. However, local legends link it to King Panduwasadeva and the tale of Princess Unmada Chitra’s confinement.

The ruins, though somewhat neglected and overgrown, offer glimpses into ancient Sri Lankan civilization. We explored remnants of stone irrigation facilities, toilets, and the foundations of a royal hall. The quiet, rustic village setting added to the charm, making it feel like we had stepped back in time.

Reaching Yapahuwa Rock Fortress

Our final destination was the iconic Yapahuwa Rock Fortress, 48.3 km from Panduwasnuwara (about 1 hour and 6 minutes via the Chilaw-Wariyapola Road and A28).

The fortress, a 300-foot marvel, dates back to the 13th century and served as Sri Lanka’s seat of governance under King Buvenekabahu. It also housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha during this period.

Climbing the Yapahuwa Rock was both a challenge and a delight. The ascent was rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, rolling hills, and ancient battlements. The fortress’ most striking feature is the intricately carved ornamental stairway, adorned with sculptures of dancers and musicians. These carvings, reminiscent of Cambodian art, add a unique cultural richness to the site.

As we climbed, we noticed elderly devotees gracefully ascending the steps, chanting prayers with unwavering dedication. This spiritual ambiance added a profound dimension to the experience. Reaching the summit, we explored the remains of the palace, moats, and semi-circular walls, marveling at the fortress’ historical significance and strategic design.

The Journey Back

After capturing countless memories and photographs, we began our return journey. We stopped for lunch near the fortress before heading back to Negombo, a drive of approximately 112.8 km (2 hours and 54 minutes via B322). Though tired from the day’s adventures, we were filled with a sense of accomplishment and wonder.

Reflections

This one-day road trip was a perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure. From the spiritual serenity of Munneswaram Temple to the ancient ruins of Panduwasnuwara and the majestic Yapahuwa Rock Fortress, every stop was an enriching experience. Our journey highlighted Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and natural beauty, leaving us inspired to plan more such explorations in the future.
